a friend removed microsoft works program and installed open office but now i can’t open any existing wps files?

a friend uninstalled microsoft works program & installed open office. now i can’t open any of my existing .wps files. i’ve tried to change defaults & associations but the files are not readable. he told me to download microsoft document viewer but that didn’t work. any suggestions? can i somehow get my microsoft works back? thanks for any help!
